He watches my stories but won't text me. Why?

He's first on every story. He hasn't sent a message in weeks. The view feels like contact, which is exactly why it works on you. It is the cheapest signal he can send, and he's sending only that.

01 // Attention is not interest

A story view costs nothing — no risk of rejection, no obligation to reply, no conversation to sustain. It keeps him on your radar and keeps you on his, while spending precisely zero. This is the backburner: enough presence that you don't fully write him off, never enough investment to actually pursue you. The mechanism is orbiting, and the currency is your hope.

A view is attention. Attention and interest are not the same thing.

02 // The move

Read the signal at its real value: low. Do not promote a story view into evidence of feelings, and do not perform for the viewer you know is watching — the curated story aimed at one silent orbiter is a way of chasing without admitting it. Interest looks like pursuit: a message, a question, a plan, a risk taken. If all you're getting is the view, all he's offering is the view.

Give your investment to the people who spend something to reach you. The orbiter either steps into real contact when the free signal stops being rewarded with your attention, or he stays in orbit forever. Both are fine — once you stop mistaking the second one for the first.

Price the view correctly. It costs him nothing.
